Collections for All: Handling objects: research and learning

Collections for All: Access & conservation

This workshop was held at Natural History Museum, Tring in April 2014 and explored different perspectives and ways of handling natural science collections in particular in research and learning.

Participants from Natural History Museum, Oxford University Museum of Natural History, Leeds Museums and Galleries,  and Horniman Museum and Gardens worked together to put together the content for toolkit blogs sharing tips and hints on how to open up access to natural science collections and what risks should be thought about and addressed.

Mark Adams, Senior Curator, Natural History Museum Bird Group, Paolo Viscardi, Curator, Horniman Musuem and Gardens, Clare Brown,Curator and Elizabeth Knight, Learning, Leeds Museums and Galleries and Dan Wormald, Learning, Natural History Museum presented case studies to share expertise on what to think about and address when thinking of: opening up core collections for hands on learning access; health and safety issues for staff and external people; and the impact of destructive analysis (how it works and issues faced).

The blog: The Real Deal by the natural science curator, Clare Brown at Leeds Museums and Galleries shares some top tips on what to consider when opening up access to natural science collections.
